Cambodia’s tourism and hospitality landscape is undergoing a profound structural adjustment. Official data for the first four months of 2026 reveals a significant 45.6% year-on-year contraction in international arrivals, totaling 1,306,546 visitors. With every month posting sharp declines—capped by a 52.5% plunge in February—it is clear that the market is dealing with a macro-level demand suppression rather than standard seasonal softness. However, beneath this challenging headline number lies a highly polarized market. For investors and business operators, the real story isn't the national decline; it is the radical divergence happening between provinces.
The national average completely masks a dramatic regional split, dividing the country into clear zones of operational crisis and unexpected opportunity. Siem Reap is currently facing acute stress, absorbing a steep double-digit decline in both foreign international arrivals (-32.2%) and internal domestic travelers (-38.9%). Conversely, Phnom Penh tells a completely different story. While the capital's international visitor segment dipped slightly by 5.5%, its internal domestic traveler market surged by an astonishing 190.7%, drawing 12.4 million domestic visitors. Urban mobility and holiday events have completely re-centered the capital's consumer footprint toward local spending patterns.

Furthermore, how travelers enter the country is fundamentally altering the profile of the active consumer. Land border and waterway entries dropped heavily by 66.4%, while air travel captured a dominant 64.2% share of all arrivals. While major legacy airports in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap saw single-to-double-digit drops, Sihanoukville International Airport emerged as a major anomaly, recording a 117.6% surge to 36,681 arrivals. This growth has allowed the Coastal Zone to maintain a modest 3.9% increase in foreign visitor numbers despite the wider national downturn. Simultaneously, regional Asian markets continue to dominate, with China (25.3% share) and Vietnam (23.9% share) combining to account for nearly half of every tourist entering the country, while Western long-haul corridors like the Americas (-11.4%) have proven to be the most resilient international volume spenders.
